Today I’m Guest Blogging for Krista Palo at Evolve! Live.Grow.Give.

We have a copy of The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein that sits amongst the other children’s books on the shelf.  It has been loved by all of our children, but especially by our son, who received it as a gift shortly before we moved from Albuquerque over 20 years ago. This book’s message has changed for me as I’ve watched each of our children grow up and leave home.

Long before any of our children were born I wrote a college research paper about love. At the time I think I had a fascination with understanding what real love was because I was dating my now husband. I remembered this paper just a few days ago and was surprised to find it tucked away in my old file cabinet.  One line of that paper still rings true to me today:

“Love is something that grows stronger everyday from simple acts of giving and receiving.”

My understanding and definition have surpassed the twitterpated feelings of a 20-year-old and evolved into the maturely rooted foundation of my relationships today.  It was not a knowledge that magically appeared after researching for a paper in college but wisdom I’ve gained as I’ve lived much like the giving tree – serving, sacrificing, changing, and giving all in the name of love.

  1. Beautiful! My Dad always used to tell me that love is like a garden…if you water it constantly, take the weeds off, give it proper care, then it will flourish. Same goes with love, you have to give and take care of your loved one. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
